Catalogue Note

A comprehensive survey of  Portuguese expansion from the time of Henry the Navigator to 1600, derived from the works of Barros, Lopes de Castanheda, Antonio San Roman, Escalante, Vartema and others. In chapter VI (book 1) the discovery of the Moluccas, the Philippines and New Guinea is described, though there is uncertainty as to whether New Guinea, or 'tierra del Papuè',  was an island or part of a great southern continent. The work also includes an account of the discovery of Brazil.
