Catalogue Note

"Reputedly the first to make the overland voyage eastward from Spain to the East Indies, Cubero was on tour from 1672 to 1679. When in Rome in 1671, he had been appointed Apostolic Preacher to Asia and the East Indies by the Congregation of the Propaganda" (F. Lach & Edwin J. van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe, vol.3, p.360). Cubero travelled from Europe through Hungary, Turkey (pp.120-166), Russia (pp.181-211), Persia, India, China, Malacca, the Philippines, Mexico, and back to Spain. The work was first published in Madrid in 1680 as Breve relaciĆ³n de la peregrinaciĆ³n.
