Catalogue Note

a handsome and clean copy of one the most celebrated and imitated of the early florilegia.

Arranged according to season, this famous Dutch work contains some of the best copper-plate figures of plants ever produced. They are mainly of the common garden flowers of the period, particularly the bulbous and tuberous plants. The majority of the plates are by Pass himself, although he was assisted by two of his brothers.

Very few copies agree in collation. The present one is composed as follows:

Part 1 [Printemps]: engraved general title; letterpress title in French (with "Descriptio des couleurs" on verso); 11 leaves describing plates in the first four parts; 2 further text leaves including an index; engraved garden view, 41 engraved plates with Latin text on versos

Part 2 [Este]: letterpress sectional title in Latin; engraved garden view; 20 engraved plates, all but the last with Latin text on verso

Part 3 [Automne]: letterpress sectional title in Latin; engraved allegorical plate; 2 leaves of text including an index; engraved garden plan; 27 engraved plates, all but the last 2 with Latin text on verso

Part 4 [Hivers]: letterpress sectional title in Latin; engraved garden plan; 12 engraved plates, all but the last with Latin text on verso; two leaves of text "Traicte compendieux et abrege des tulipans", with an engraved illustration; 12 engraved plates of tulips
