Catalogue Note

The first biography of Father Anchieta (1565-1622), the Apostle of Brazil, defender of the indigenous population and said to be the founder of Sao Paolo.

"Beretario's life of Anchieta is based on the manuscript of Father Pedro Rodrigues, visiting Father to Angola and Brazil. This manuscript was unpublished at the time, but several copies were in circulation and served as the basis for all the biographies of Anchieta... This is the first edition of Beretario's work. It is rare today." (Borba de Moraes)
