Catalogue Note

This important and rare pair of maps show the Americas at the end of the sixteenth century. They were derived largely from the world map by Petrus Plancius (1592) and the North America is dominated by a wide Northwest Passage.

Although the maps were an advance on existing maps, the lack of success of the atlas hampered their influence. (see footnote to lot 100).

Together, they are among the earliest separate printed maps of North and South America.
