Catalogue Note

rare in this edition. Joinville, who accompanied Louis IX on his crusade to Egypt, is the most important source for this extraordinary undertaking. The king left France for Cyprus in 1248 where he remained until the spring of 1250, when he embarked for Egypt. Joinville's life of Louis IX includes much on Cyprus, the alliance with Henry I, the building of the cathedral at Nicosia, dealings with the Mongols and the victory at Damietta by Henry, Baldwin and Guy d'Ibelin.
