a rare work on morocco. Coutinho was the Portuguese governor of the fortified city of Mazagan (El Jadida) on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, from 1624 to 1627 and this important work relates his experiences. The port had been taken by the Portuguese in 1502, who held it until 1769, after which they founded a new city of the same name, Nova Mazagão, in Para, Brazil.
