Catalogue Note

Benjamin of Tudela, in Navarre, sometimes called the 'Wandering Rabbi', was especially interested in the condition of the Jews in the many countries that he visited between about 1160 and 1173. From Spain, he went to Greece, Constantinople, the Aegean Archipelago, Cyprus, Syria, Palestine and Egypt to Baghdad and back. His narrative divides into what he saw and what he heard, his description of Persia apparently falling into the latter category.
