Catalogue Note

This Ptolemaic world map was just one of a variety of maps published in Margarita philosophica, the first ''modern'' encyclopaedia published in various editions from 1503. A simple woodcut, this map shows no hint of the discovery of America displayed in the contemporary maps by Francesco Rosselli and Joannes Ruysch (1506 and 1508). There is a note on the map indicating the southern extension of Africa, recording the Portuguese discoveries.
