Description

  • 24.5cm., 9 5/8 in.
of green tint, the deep ovoid bowl painted with a portrait of St.James with his attributes, an arched  ribbon above, inscribed Save teum [?] ecclesiam Catholicam sanctorum Com. i. nio (?) nuw, the sides inscribed S.IACOBUS MINOR 1677 DER 9, the reverse with flowers, all above a cylindrical lower section applied with three rows of raspberry prunts, over a later replacement spun foot, the domed cover with floral band below a double knop

Catalogue Note

The present lot belongs to a series of glasses of the twelve apostles of which this is number 9. Number 8 depicting St.Matthew and inscribed Credo in spiritum sanctum S.Mattheus, Der 8 Anno 1677, from the F.von Parpart Collection, was sold at auction by Lepke, Berlin,18th-22nd March 1912, lot 839. The remaining glasses from this series are now unrecorded.

The form of this roemer is also known with enamel decoration, including one dated 1677 in the Hermitage Museum, St.Petersburg, and two in Marburger Universitätsmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, dated 1665.
