Catalogue Note

Jagger's portrait of the king (1765-1837) was painted before the artist's death in 1827 when the sitter was still Duke of Clarence.  The image was engraved by Henry Edward Dawe in 1830, after William had ascended the throne.  The same image appears on a snuff box, formerly in the Phillips Collection, illustrated, D. Richter, Lackdosen, 1988, no. 173; and on another large box, numbered: 1045, which sold, Christie's South Kensington, 15 September 2004, lot 523.
