Catalogue Note

For other examples of the Unfaithful Slave, on a plaque and a snuff box, see D. Richter, Stobwasser: Lackkunst aus Braunschweig & Berlin, vol. I, 2005, nos. 193 and 194.  As upright objects, Stobwasser cigar cases naturally tended to be decorated with vertically-oriented images, though occasionally a horizontal subject was thought appealing enough to overcome any incongruity.
