each side with an oval medallion enclosing a classical bust en grisaille, within a gilt frame below foliate swags secured by a ribbon, the pierced cover with matching swags, the foot moulded with gilt-edged acanthus leaves

Condition

The Cover: The finial is restuck (the gilt band at base of finial is regilt to conceal repair). There is a ca. 1cm wide repaired chip to the rim of the cover (mostly to the underside edge, extending up the side of the rim ca. 2mm - gilding retouched). There is a repaired chip to the rim of the cover - probably about 1.5cm wide - extending upwards from the rim to the top of the second gilt band at the highest point. About 6cm of the gilt rim is retouched (discoloured), and about 5cm of the second gilt band above is retouched. There is a narrower area of (old discoloured) overpainting between the two gilt bands over the repair. A few scattered scuffs to gilt rim overall. The Vase: The body of the vase was broken in two pieces: the repair runs from the rim downwards across the right side of one portrait medallion (the side illustrated in the catalogue), across the base, and straight up to the rim along the left side, in line with the far side of the handle (as seen in catalogue illustration). There is extensive overpainting to the interior (discoloured and flaking). There is also some overpainting and retouching to gilding along the break, including a small chip (ca 4mm) - part of a ca 2cm narrow chip along the break of which the rest is filled below the handle. Both handles were broken in three pieces and are crudely restuck (extensive old overpaitning and discoloured regilding). The foot: A section of the foot (about 1/5 of circumference) was cracked - and probably restuck. here is extensive old overpainting to the underside, and about 1/3 of the rim of the foot is regilt/overpainted. There is some regilding and overpainting to two of the moulded acanthus leaves, and a narrow, c1cm sliver of porcelain lacking along one hairline crack to domed section of foot.
