Catalogue Note
Charles Cundall studied at The Manchester School of Art before gaining a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, London. Having served in the First World War he continued his studies at the Slade School and later in Paris.
The stand in the present work was named after Dunstan (909-988) who amongst other good works was famed for his cunning dealings with the Devil. Legend has it that Satan asked Dunstan to to re-shoe his horse on the downs, instead Dunstan, a blacksmith by trade, shod the devil's hoof causing him great pain. Dunstan agreed to remove the shoe only if the devil swore never to cross the threshold of a house with a horseshoe above it, hence the superstition that a horse shoe brings good luck.
