Catalogue Note
Jack Waugh is perhaps better known as a trainer than a jockey. He was a member of the famous Waugh racing dynasty, a son of R.T. Waugh and a brother of Tom Waugh. From 1927 to 1932 he assisted his father at his Newmarket stables, before moving on to be assistant to Basil Jarvis from 1932 to 1939. After service in the Royal Artillery, he took out a licence to train in his own right. He had a successful career and trained the winners of many good races including the July Cup (twice), Cheveley Park Stakes, Ribblesdale Stakes (twice), Wokingham Stakes, Coventry Stakes, National Breeders’ Produce Stakes, Ladbroke Gold Cup, Crocker Bulteel Cup, Queen Mary Stakes, Royal Lodge Stakes and the Park Hill Stakes. The main patrons at his Heath House stables at Newmarket included the Macdonald-Buchanan family, Lord Fairhaven, Lord Howard de Walden, Major Bourne, Mr G C Gibson, Mrs R Humphreys, Mr A W Parkinson, Mrs R A Raphael and Mrs M G Wyatt.
It is not clear when his friendship with Munnings was formed but it was a clearly a lasting and affectionate one. As the inscription reports Amron was a bay gelding foaled in 1950 by Fairey Fulmer out of Norma and although major success seems to have eluded him he was placed twice in 1952, the year the present work was executed.
