Catalogue Note
The Fernie Hunt was founded in 1853. Sir Richard Sutton considered the Quorn country too large and therefore encouraged his son to form an independent pack to hunt in South Leicestershire. The hunt takes its name from Charles Fernie of Keythorpe Hall who was master for thirty-one seasons from 1888.
The sitter in the present work, Colonel Tony Murray-Smith, was Master from 1960-1983.
