Condition

Structure: The picture has been relined and there are areas of very fine surface cracking, mainly in the sky. The picture may benefit from a light clean. The paint surface appears to be stable throughout. There are one or two areas of old restoration which have discoloured, noticeably two long lines in the sky. Under ultraviolet light: There are restorations along the edges of the canvas, minor spots of retouching in a few areas in the lower half. There is a large L-shaped repair in the sky which is likely to be an old tear. Other spots of retouching appear in the sky. Frame: Contained in a 19th century regilted plaster frame. Colour: The colours are stronger and more vivid than the catalogue illustration suggests, in fact they are warmer and fresher and not as yellow. Please note that this picture is by J F Herring Junior and by Alexander F. Rolfe and is signed and dated; J F Herring & AF Rolfe. 1860

Catalogue Note

Alexander Rolfe is best known for his angling subjects.  His sister, Kate Rolfe, also an artist, became Herring junior's wife.  It is presumably due to this that they collaborated on a number of occasions.
