Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE A number of retouchings have discoloured and are visible under natural light. There is some light blooming to the lower right edge and some light frame abrasion to the lower edge. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under utlraviolet light reveals some passages of retouching in the sky, and around the outline of the coach. Other minor scattered retouchings. CONCLUSION This work is in good overall condition. Held in a gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

George James, 4th Earl of Cholmondeley, was the son of George Cholmondeley, styled Viscount Malpas, and his wife, Hester, daughter of Sir Francis Edwardes, 3rd Bt.  He served as Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, 1770-83, was Envoy to Berlin, 1782, Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard, 1783, and Chamberlain to the Prince of Wales, 1795-1800.  In 1791 he married Georgiana, daughter of Peregrine Bertie, 3rd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven.  He was created Marquess of Cholmondeley in 1815.
