Catalogue Note
The Doncaster Cup in 1850 was a great match between Voltigeur and The Flying Ducthman. They were the only two runners and both horses were as yet unbeaten. Voltigeur belonged to the Earl of Zetland and was ridden by Ned Flatman. The Flying Dutchman was owned by the Earl of Eglinton and was ridden by Charlie Marlow. The Flying Dutchman was the favourite to win and was 1-4 favourite. It was Voltigueur, however, that won the race by a neck. It was only after the event that Charlie Marlow confessed to Lord Eglinton that he had raced whilst drunk. Lord Eglinton forgave the jockey and immediately challenged Lord Zetland to a re-match which was won by The Flying Dutchman.
Voltigeur was a brown colt by Voltaire out of Martha Lynn by Mulatto was bred by Robert Stephenson of Hartlepool in 1847 and was bought by Lord Zetland for 1,000 gns. He won six races in all. The Flying Ducthman was a brown colt foaled in 1846 by Bay Middleton out of Barbelle by Sandbeck. The Flying Dutchman was retired to stud after the rematch. In his career he won the Derby, the St Leger, The July Stakes, Champagne Stakes, and the Ascot Gold Cup.
