Catalogue Note

Beeswing was foaled in 1823 by Doctor Syntax out of a mare by Ardossan.  She was bred by Ralph Riddell and was sold to William Orde of Nunney Kirk, Northumberland for whom she had an extraordinarily successful career, and whose initials are prominently displayed on the blanket in the foreground of the composition.    She raced sixty-four times between 1835 and 1842, and was the winner on fifty-one occasions.  She won the Doncaster Cup for three successive years 1840-42.  In 1842 she also won the Ascot Gold Cup.
