Catalogue Note

Son of the sculptor and medallist Raymond Gayrard, Paul-Joseph-Raymond was a pupil of both Rude and David d'Angers. He made his Salon début in 1827 with a group of busts. Gayrard was awarded the cross of the Légion d'honneur in 1853.

The present model is one of his finest, as it captures all of the tense power of the harnessed horse. The original plaster for the model was exhibited at the Salon of 1847, and the highly acclaimed bronze in the following year. It was later edited in several sizes of which this finely finished cast is the smallest.
