Catalogue Note

This figure of a mare also appears in another of Bonheur’s models, his End of a Fox Hunt, illustrated by Christopher Payne. In that more complex group the horse leans down to sniff at a dog whilst a standing huntsman offers a light to the rider’s cigarette. Pared down to its essential figure the bronze becomes a naturalistic study of the simple lines of Bonheur’s favourite subject – the horse.
