Catalogue Note
Mêne's Jument arabe et son poulain is one of his most appealing groups in which the sculptor has expertly captured the somewhat awkward playfulness of a foal as it grows in stability and confidence. It is also a study in the behavioural relationship between mare and foal. The popularity of this group is reflected in the three different types of casts which are known to exist. Some have no foundry mark, as in the present model, while others are inscribed by the Susse foundry. The model appears as no. 33 in Mêne's Susse catalogue. The present cast is the larger version of the two known sizes.
