Original canvas. There is a small line of flecked retouchings to the lower left branches of the poplar trees and some further minor retouchings to the left edge of the work visible under ultraviolet light. Apart from some minor frame abrasion to the left edge, the paint surface is in good condition. Held in a fluted gilt wood frame.

Painted in Normandy in the early 1880s.

Following his studies first in Christiania (Oslo) and then in Copenhagen and Munich, Skredsvig lived in Paris between 1879 and 1885. During the years he spent in France he developed the evocative neo-romantic style which is such a feature of the present work, and with which Skredsvig's name is so associated.
