Acquired by the father of the present owner in the 1960s

Original canvas. Some of the pigments fluoresce under ultraviolet light though this does not appear to be retouching. Overall the work is in very good original condition. Held in a plaster moulded gilt frame.

Christian Krohg (see lots 362, 383, 384 and 408) and Edvard Munch (see lot 363) were central to the Bohemian movement in Norway. They and others like them sort a freedom of expression unbound by the traditions of the time. In 1882, Krohg and Munch rented a studio, with other artists, in Oslo known as Pultosten. The initial plan was to work independently of one another; however, when Krohg offered to instruct the group nobody refused.

Krohg was one of the most significant Realists in the Norwegian tradition. He was a telling social commentator, who was attracted to a wide range of subject matter, and had a great influence on Munch. Both Krohg's works The Farewell of 1876 and The Sick Girl of 1880-1 were key in inspiring Munch's breakthrough work The Sick Child; which caused huge controversy in 1885, but was staunchly defended by Krohg. It is even thought that Krohg's portrait of his wife Oda of 1888 influenced Munch's Madonna. The two remained close and Krohg painted Munch into his work A Corner of my Studio of 1885. They were to paint together again in Åsgårdstrand in 1889.
