Description
carved in two sections, with an oval handle wrapped in cloth strips, the body in the form of a bird in flight, with a small round device, possibly representing the sun, in its slightly parted beak, the compressed underbelly finely carved with a form line pattern and bird-like face with hooked beak, the outspread wings carved in relief and painted with conventionalized designs, the arching back surmounted by a shaman figure in a reclining posture, his stylized ovoid head with long tongue protruding into the mouth of a bird, with flattened feather crest and mask-like facial features, painted overall with red, green and black pigments; the eyes of the bird and the shaman inset with plaques of abalone.
