Description

emerging from a vertical curved panel, the seated tiki with delicate features and intricately carved motifs on the face, the eyes inset with black lip oyster shell (pictada margaritifera); exceptionally fine lustrous reddish brown and partially oily patina.

Catalogue Note

According to Roger Neich (personal communication March 21, 2007) this intricately detailed figure more than likely decorated the side of a gourd or hue. The fine work and stylization of the figure suggests it is carved in the Rougowkakaata tribal style. These people lived around present-day Gisborne, New Zealand, and were famous for their carving skills in the early 19th century. Compare the command in the carving of this diminutive figure with the Te Hau ki Turanga meeting house, now in the Te Papa Museum, New Zealand.
