Catalogue Note

This mask was purchased from the Kukurai or hereditary chieftain of Yasa village and was made by a commoner. This type of mask is made in three villages: Yasa, Kakuluma and Biliau. It is called Lapun or old Man in pidgin English. When used, the porter of the mask is supposed to frighten people with spears prior to the singsing celebration.
