Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in good condition. There is a light and even cracquelure to the paint surface which is characteristic of age. There is an area of repair to the upper right of the canvas, though only visible on very close inspection. ULTRAVIOLET Ultraviolet light reveals widespread re-touching which is mainly concentrated in the background. There is a small area of re-touching to the mainsail and mast of the central ship, and another small area of re-touching just behind the stern. FRAME Held in a carved gilt wood frame.
