en forme de sablier, la partie supérieure recouverte d'une membrane en cuir tanné et flanquée de deux anses percées de trous de suspension. Le piétement est entièrement décoré de rainures profondes dessinant des motifs de chevrons et de losanges imbriqués, et de bandes vierges ornées de clous de laiton. Belle patine brune, brillante.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.
A large stable crack and a small hole on the foot. Stable hairline cracks and a few tiny superficial losses.

Catalogue Note
Selon Nooter Roberts et Roberts (1996 : 100), "de nombreux objets emblématiques Luba ne montrent pas de motifs figuratifs mais sont embellis d'élégants dessins géométriques gravés. A l'instar d'un corps féminin considéré comme impropre au mariage jusqu'à ce qu'il soit scarifié, un emblème royal doit revêtir ces signes de la civilisation Luba. Les tambours royaux Luba sont joués lors de l'investiture et des funérailles des dignitaires, ou à la mort de leur fils. Le type de tambour représenté ici est également utilisé par les membres Mbudye lors de performances dansées ou d'initiations".
