- Rare et très belle boîte à priser, Sotho
- long. 53,4 cm
- 21 in
en corne d'antilope, monoxyle, dont la forme évoque un personnage stylisé : la boîte à priser proprement dite représentant la tête, surmontée d'un petit chapeau formant couvercle, les oreilles (en très léger creux) et le nez très finement dessinés, les yeux et la bouche figurés par trois creux noircis, le corps se divisant en deux longues tiges ondulantes. Superbe patine nuancée de la corne, allant du beige au brun et brun rouge.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.
A minor loss to the tip of the proper right 'tail' as evidenced by the catalogue illustration. A few old nicks to body and 'tails'. Please note that we have not removed the stopper as it does not seem to come off readily.

Introduit par les Portugais au Mozambique dès le XVIe siècle, le tabac fut cultivé très rapidement sur tout le continent africain. En Afrique du Sud, "on attribuait au tabac la propriété de dégager l'esprit de ses pensées secondaires et de faciliter ainsi le contact avec les esprits des ancêtres" (Valentin et Joubert, 2002). Objet intime et personnel, cette boîte à priser est remarquable par sa prouesse technique : la corne de capridé est modelée à chaud et travaillée avec soin. Sa forme sophistiquée et rare la destinait selon toute vraisemblance à un personnage de haut rang. cf. Phillips (1995 : 213) pour une boîte à priser comparable.
