Catalogue Note
Patented in 1903, Simpson endeavored to make the tallest part of the face in the center, where the ball should be struck. The "ball face" clubs were made in three different models: this mashie, a cleek, and an iron. Robert Simpson was a highly respected Carnoustie clubmaker who came from a famous golfing family that included brother Jack Simpson, winner of the Open Championship in 1884. For more Robert Simpson clubs, please see lots 355, 405, 419, 425 and 532.
