The vibrant tones and undulating forms of the present work immediately signal O'Neill's affinity with the landscape and in particular, his awareness of the relationship between people and their surrounding countryside. In Landscape with Trees, three brightly dressed girls stand within a freshly harvested field, literally at one with nature, framed by the swirling contours of the trees on the horizon.
Having grown up within the urban cityscapes of Belfast, O'Neill's passion for the landscape around him eventually effected his move with his family in the early 1950s to a cottage in Conlig, a small village on the Ards Peninsula in Co.Down where he lived before moving to London in 1958.
