Catalogue Note

The present work most likely depicts the Sheepscott River, Maine. In 1912, O'Kelly spent five months painting in Maine, the northern most county of New England, U.S.A. and whilst his principal subject was the Sheepscott River, he was also inspired by the expanse of coastline nearby and the traditional way of life advocated by the local inhabitants.
