Provenance

Acquired by the present owner's grandfather in India in 1914

Catalogue Note

Label on reverse reads 'The opinion of Mr Robert Skelton, Keeper, Indian section of the Victoria and Albert Museum, is that the picture is a portrait of a Maharatta ruler probably painted in Hyderabad or Secunderabad, Deccan in the late 18c or early 19c.  The picture has (under the European mount) a conventional decorative border part of which is cut off.  There is no identifying inscription on the back./ The picture was brought home from India by my father, Rev Frederick Lamb, during the 1914 war.  My father had lived in Secunderabad and had been chairman of the Methodist Hyderabad District./ 25 June 1970'
