Catalogue Note
The S.M.S. Kaiserin Augusta was the first German cruiser without masts, and was also the first with the three shaft arrangement. This would become common in later ships due to the high engine power of the ship that was needed to reach the relatively high top speed. It was designed as an attempt to combine the roles of fleet scout and colonial cruiser in one type as a cost saving measure. The Kaiserin Augusta was used as a gunnery training ship during the First World War and was scrapped in 1920.
