Very good condition overall, enamel finely painted with a few very minor scratches to the surface of the enamel, consistent with age. Minor oxidation to the giltcopper frame, the mirror stained and with collection labels.

Au centre de la plaque octogonale en émail peint figure dans un ovale le portrait d'Anne d'Autriche, reine de France de 1615 à 1643. L'ovale est entouré de fleurs à paillons et rinceaux en or sur fond noir, surmonté d'une couronne d'or en haut, et flanqué de chaque côté d'un oiseau polychrome. Un miroir occupe le revers de l'émail.

Anne d'Autriche, infante d'Espagne, née le 22 septembre 1601 et morte le 20 janvier 1666, fut reine de France et de Navarre de 1615 à 1643 en tant qu' épouse de Louis XIII. Elle est la fille du roi Philippe III d'Espagne (1578-1621), et de l'archiduchesse Marguerite d'Autriche (1584-1611). Par sa naissance, elle porte les titres d'infante d'Espagne, infante du Portugal, archiduchesse d'Autriche, princesse de Bourgogne et princesse des Pays-Bas.

Ce petit portrait, par son décor peint ainsi que par le cadre en argent doré, décoré de fleurons, est très proche de la plaque en émail représentant le jeune Louis XIII conservée au Musée du Louvre (inv. no. OA 11063). Attribué à l'émailleur Jean Limosin, le portrait de Louis XIII daterait de 1615, et aurait été réalisé, selon S. Baratte, pour commémorer le mariage de Louis XIII avec Anne d'Autriche cette même année. Le portrait d'Anne d'Autriche en émail peint était probablement créé comme pendant au portrait du roi Louis XIII jeune. Il existe deux autres exemplaires du portrait du roi : l'un au musée de Copenhague (inv.no. D496/1982), et l'autre, signé Jean Limosin à la Wallace collection de Londres (inv. no. III F251).

Le mèdaillon figura dans l'inventaire Dormeuil décrit comme "portrait de Marie, infante d'Espagne". L'explication serait sans doute parce qu'elle était baptisée Ana Maria Mauricia.

A PAINTED AND GILT ENAMEL PORTRAIT OF ANNE OF AUSTRIA  (1601-1666), WIFE OF LOUIS XIII, QUEEN OF FRANCE AND NAVARRE (1615-1643)

Centred by an oval portrait of Anne of Austria, Queen of France from 1615 to 1643, the portrait is surrounded by an octagonal enamel framework of jewelled flowers surmounted at the top by a gilt crown flanked by colourful birds. On the reverse there is a mirror.

Anne of Austria, Infanta of Spain was born in 1601 and died in 1666. Queen of France and Navarre from 1615-1643 as the consort to Louis XIII.  She was the daughter of Habsburg parents, Philip III, King of Spain (1578-1621) and of the Archduchess Margaret of Austria(1564-1611). Her titles included those of Infanta of Spain, infanta of Portugal, arch-duchess of Austria, princess of Burgundy and princess of the Netherlands.

The enamelled border as well as the gilt bronze frame of this portrait can be closely compared with that surrounding the portrait of the young Louis XIII in the Louvre (inv.no. OA 11063). Indeed the present enamel may have been created as its pendant. Baratte dates the portrait of Louis XIII to circa 1615 and attributes it to Jean Limosin; it was probably made to commemorate the marriage of the young king to to Anne of Austria. Two similar portraits of Louis XIII are in the Nationalmuseet Copenhagen, (inv. no. D496/1982) and in the Wallace Collection (inv. no. III F 251).

This enamel portrait was previously listed as being a portrait of Maria Infanta of Spain.  This can be readily understood as Anne infanta of Spain and of Portugal and  archduchess of Austria, was baptised Ana Maria Mauricia.
