Willem va Mieris (1662 - 1747) was a Dutch painter who applied his meticulous, enamel-smooth surface to a surprisingly wide range of subjects: portraiture, landscape, genre, classical mythology and biblical history.  This small canvas is as much decorative as religious, the Old Testament story providing an opportunity for the artist to dislay his virtuousity in representing texture and surface: young pale limbs and wrinkled, aged faces, hair and textiles, reflective metal and running water
