Two 'Cizhou'-type 'sgraffiato' black-glazed vases

the first of tall ovoid form, set with a short neck and wedge-shaped flanged mouth, applied all over with a thick lustrous brown slip, carved to the mid-section in sgraffiato technique with a band of scrolling foliage on a hatched ground; the second with angled shoulder above large lobed panels enclosing peony sprays in cut-glaze technique reserved against a combed wave ground, the glaze stopping well short of the foot to reveal the greyish buff ware (2)
