Catalogue Note

Huang Binhong was born in southern Anhui to a painting family.  His grandfather was a well known artist and he grew up studying painting.  He was influenced by the painters from the Mount Huang tradition, including many Ming artists such as Shitao, Cheng Sui, Gong Xian and Dong Qichang.  Compare a similar painting sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 7th April 2006, lot 267.
