Catalogue Note

Pan Tianshou was an esteemed painter of flowers, birds and rocks, and was strongly influenced by the monk-painters Bada Shanren and Shitao.  The strength of his brushwork, his skillful manipulation of ink gradations and often times eccentric compositions are hallmarks of his style and, as evidenced by the present painting, give his work great animation.
