Catalogue Note

This painting exemplifies Xu's skill at combining Western perspective and anatomy with traditional techniques of Chinese brushwork.  Although the depiction of horses has a long history in China, Xu was able to paint this traditional subject with what he considered to be a modern technique.

Compare a similar painting of a galloping horse sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th May 2006, lot 732.
