Condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting has received more restoration than many paintings by Dawson. The canvas has been lined and the paint layer has been cleaned and varnished. Whereas the water and the ship have survived very well, the paint layer in the sky has cracked quite noticeably and these separation cracks have received a fair amount of retouching. In the lower left sky some of the more sketchy clouds have been embellished slightly by a restorer. While this restoration is not very accurate or economically applied, the cracking does dictate that there should be restoration in this area. The conservation could be improved noticeably both under ultraviolet light and to the naked eye however, this is certainly a painting with a degree of a condition issue even if it is somewhat acceptable.
