The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.: This painting is in very good condition. The canvas is unlined and the paint layer is stable. It is possibly slightly dirty, but it looks well as is. A few cracks have been retouched in the breaking waves directly ahead of the boat, and there is a small spot in the sky in the upper left which appears to be retouched. Under ultraviolet light one can see a faintly fluorescent tone which has been added across the clouds on the left and right side of the ship. Whether or not this corresponds to a light glaze used by a restorer to reduce some cracking is unclear. However, if indeed it is retouching, it can easily be removed and the amount of retouching that is actually necessary to this kind of picture is extremely minimal. There is also a possibility that some broad and irresponsible restoration has been applied.
