Catalogue Note

Autichamp is a picturesque Provencal town on the banks of the river Drôme. The model Antoinette appears in several of the pictures painted at Autichamp in 1961 and 1962, including Antoinette and the Bathers and The Swing in the château Yard, Autichamp. Flint had a particular fascination with grottoes as he described; 'I used to despise the term 'grotto' as implying something false and meretricious but, during 1913, an inspection of all the grottoes of the island of Capri made me change my mind.' (Exhibition of Works by Sir William Russell Flint RA PPRWS, exhibition catalogue for the Royal Academy, 1962, p.8)
