Catalogue Note
Richard Ormond has described this pair of pictures thus; 'The glowing colour and sensuous textures of fur, distinctively painted almost hair by hair, makes these beautiful creatures all the more pitiable. This is what deerstalking is all about - killing - and we are faced by the reality of what is involved. Landseer deliberately dramatises the sport he loved so much, and he means to shock us and draw out our sympathy. His deer are wild animals living in extreme conditions. Like his Highlanders they have a savage and unfamiliar character to them, and it was this as much as the cruelty on display which excited the contemporary audience.' (Richard Ormond, The Monarch of the Glen, Landseer in the Highlands, 2005, both illus. p. 53)
