Condition
The sheet is sound, but slightly discoloured with some minor spots of foxing in places along the outer edges. There are some minor media marks and smudging to the edges of the sheet also. Held in a gold painted wooden frame and under glass. Unexamined out of frame.

Repin took three years to paint his masterpiece Barge Haulers on the Volga (1870-73). It is a meticulously researched piece, for which he produced a vast number of studies.
A comparative pencil sketch executed in 1870 hangs in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
