Catalogue Note

The Union of Youth was formed in 1910 and held its first exhibition in St Petersburg. The first volume Sadok Sudei was published the same year and was intended to shock. It was printed on the reverse of household wallpaper and brought together contributors from both the Moscow and St Petersburg Avant-Garde movements, including the Hylaean and Rayist groups. This second volume was designed as a more aggressive sequel and includes a long Hylaean manifesto stating that their intent was to ignore current trends in rhyme and poetry and to create a new, expressive genre and style concentrating on personal freedom and verbal richness.
