A travelling desk set, probably Tula manufactory, 19th century

encased in a rectangular Karelian birchwood box, the lid inset with micromosaic depicting a cockerel and chickens and applied with faceted steel beads, borders similarly decorated with scrolling foliage motif and set to each side with stones, the interior comprising a notebook flanked by two lidded compartments and four small glass inkwells    

The birchwood veneer is raised along the join to the right of the central decoration and there are several cracks on the borders. The wood is chipped to the rear left corner and the front right corner of the side walls. Several steel beads are lacking and there is minor corrosion to the metal. There is a small pinhole just above the lock and the key is missing . The left wall of the central compartment has been replaced and is lacking beaded decoration. There are chips to the rims of two of the glasswells. A very unusual piece in overall good condition consistent with age and use.
