Catalogue Note
Vagrich Bakhchanyan immigrated to the United States in 1974. While still in the Soviet Union, Bakhchanyan worked for a variety of publications, including Yunost', Znanie--sila, and Literaturnaya gazeta, and his graphic works often involved verbal play of various kinds. Bakhchanyan was one of the first Soviet nonconformist artists to develop the genre of the handmade book in the early 1960s. Crossing the border between the visual and verbal is a key element in Bakhchanyan's works, as exemplified by Rebus.
